Weightlifting has gained a lot of popularity recently through CrossFit, and rightfully so. However, for someone unfamiliar with Weightlifting, or even CrossFit, the first thing that comes to mind is likely the Bench Press (don’t lie, you know you were thinking it). Let me put that to rest, the bench press is not contested in weightlifting.
So what is Weightlifting?
Weightlifting is a sport where athletes aim to take the most weight they can from the ground to overhead. Weightlifters compete in two lifts: the Snatch and Clean & Jerk. In the Snatch athletes must, in one smooth motion, take the barbell from the ground to overhead. The Clean & Jerk starts with the lifter taking the bar from the ground and catching it on their shoulders, before bringing the bar overhead. These are often referred to as the Olympic LIfts because these lifts are contested in the Olympics.
When watching someone perform the lifts they look simple enough, but the reality is that they’re among the most complex lifts that can be performed with a barbell. They can take even the most talented lifters years to master.
Well, if they’re so difficult why do them at all? Is the payoff worth all the time spent learning how to do the lifts properly? The answer is absolutely! The Olympic-style lifts are unparalleled in their ability to produce power, an attribute that is universal among sports. Whether you’re a football player, field hockey player, CrossFitter, or just looking to maintain an active lifestyle, tremendous benefit can be gained from performing them. These movements will test and improve your strength, power, balance, flexibility, agility, coordination, and stability like no other.
